Pink Rose & Sensuous Musk:
Creating the perfume "Pink Rose & Sensuous Musk" and adding it to the Pairfum London Collection, was without doubt a foregone conclusion, as a Fragrance Collection without 'Rose' is as unimaginable as having a love affair without your heart skipping a beat.
This fragrance is an 'Ode to Rose' but not in the style of the classical Tea Rose. Instead, the secret of this perfume is wrapping-up the fragrance of Rose, this Queen of Flowers, into a light, fresh & young top note and a sensuous base note of the softest enveloping Musk and warm but radiant Amber.
This is most definitely not a classical Rose fragrance but we believe a most elegant and modern evolution.
It is the combination of Musk and Amber that are 'Under the Rose' note, i.e. in the base note, that create the magic of this fragrance.
Keep your discovery of "Pink Rose & Sensuous Musk" a secret or "Sub Rosa".
"Sub Rosa"
Find out how "Sub Rosa" became the inspiration for this perfume within the context of the importance & history of Rose within the world of Perfumery.
Not only is the rose known as the 'Queen of Flowers’, it is also the one flower most associated with Love - from the Greek goddess of Love Aphrodite to her Roman counterpart, Venus.
The Rose has been one of the cornerstones of perfumery since its inception: a mystical bloom with an elusive essence that perfumers, artists and poets have been capturing in their own way throughout history. Highly prised in both the ancient and modern world, these beautiful flowers and their precious oils are still one of the most expensive elements used in Perfumery today.
The sheer spectrum of rose aromas is so broad and varied, it is not really surprising that when someone is asked "What does a Rose smell of?", it is almost impossible for them to describe. It ranges from soft and feminine to warm and spicy with the addition of woody, fruity, green, musky, powdery, myrr, clove, mossy & tea notes. They can all be found in this amazing flower! The vast array of notes produced by this exquisite blossom makes it a Perfumers playground.
The use of Rose as a prime ingredient in ancient perfumery has been well documented and it is written into our perfumery DNA. Today's modern creations are no exception with over 70% of all feminine fragrances and over 10% of all male fragrances containing Rose.
Rose oil, also known as rose otto, attar of roses, rose absolute or rose essence, is the essential oil extracted from the petals of various types of roses. While rose otto is extracted using steam distillation, the more precious rose absolute is extracted via solvents or today via supercritical CO2 extraction.
The roses most commonly used in perfumery are the Turkish rose, the Damask rose and Rosa Centifolia, meaning the hundred leaved/petalled rose also more commonly known as the Provence Rose, Cabbage Rose or Rose de Mai. The Rose de Mai which has now become synonymous with Grasse in the south of France and generally blooms in the month of May, was in fact developed by Dutch rose breeders between the 17th century and the 19th century. It is also known as ‘the painter’s rose’ because it features in many works of the old masters.
Today around 70% of the worlds rose oil is produced in Bulgaria, while other significant producers are Turkey, Iran and Morocco, with only limited quantities being produced in Grasse.
The art of Rose picking, and it is an 'Art', is to pick the blooms in the early morning before the rose begins to fade. To prevent the rose fading in some cases Bulgarian & Turkish farmers bring their copper stills to the fields. Heating them using wood fires to distill the Rose oil, to separate it from the water when heated, it takes hundreds of rose petals to produce a tiny amount of this precious oil.
The term "Sub Rosa" or 'Under the Rose' means confidentiality or secrecy, where the dining rooms ceilings of the ancient Romans were decorated with Roses. It was understood by all that what was discussed during a meal 'Under the Roses' was kept secret, ...
It will not come as a secret to you that the Rose has become woven into the tapestry of Perfumery, capturing our Hearts and Minds, with its delicate, radiant yet distinctly different notes.
However, one 'secret' that we will share with you is this: rose is almost certainly used in some of your favourite Perfumes, in some cases without you even knowing, ... this is most definitely a case of "Sub Rosa".
